[ ANONYMOUS TEXT. ]

How can you tell when someone's really gone versus when this place is just messing with you?

[ and then, in a separate VIDEO post... ]

I received this picture in one of those digital frames. It's no one I know or recognize, so I figure it must belong to someone here. So, if someone near and dear to you isn't, um...

[ She looks down, trying to figure out how to phrase this. ]

Exactly human? Or of Earth. It's probably yours.

I seem to have something that doesn't belong to me. A painting. And it's nice, but not really my style.

If you're missing a painting, tell me what it's of. Right answer gets the grand prize.

(He wants to vent; to expound upon his feelings about the sheer madness of Wonderland, but really, everyone is likely sick to death of it. Disorder has that effect on people and so, instead, the little Earl seeks to impose order. Of course the entire enterprise might be ripped to shreds by chaos, but he is hardly the sort to lay down and let the world walk all over him.)

Might I make a suggestion that we stockpile our weapons and keep a running checklist of what we have? An armory would be the best option for such a task, but each resident is entitled to their own tools of defense. Wonderland hardly gives us any warning when it strikes.

(So he must rely on the unreliable.)

Can I trust everyone to be honest about your ammunitions? Your guns, your knives, your swords and so forth? Furthermore, those who possess some skill in defensive arts, can you please speak up?

Privacy is not a luxury we can afford.

[ It's been a weird few months in Wonderland, and this last event was disconcerting in the way that it robbed them all of their real identities for a little while. That world was all they knew, and she hated that loss of control, of having her memories completely twisted without her consent. Patterson wishes they would never have to go through that again, but knows that probably won't be the last of it.

Which just makes her even more determined to do what she wants, something she has some semblance of control over. She wants to know more people here, and she wants them all to make their own fun, even if that's a fleeting thing. Even if their captors never give a damn, Patterson will never give them the satisfaction of being visibly frustrated or upset by the circumstances of this place.

So she starts the video feed with a smile and a little wave. ]

Hey, everyone out there. Some of you know me, but just in case: I'm Patterson. Been here a few months now. It's...an adventure, right?

Anyway, I was thinking about ways to kind of make this place feel even just slightly more normal. Something we can control. Okay, so back home, I collect board games. Like, a lot. [ Enough that she has them organized alphabetically by board game creator. ] We should do a monthly game night. Or weekly? And maybe sometimes we could even come up with a murder mystery game. Like a dinner theater type thing. Would anyone out there even care? I wanna find an empty room, decorate it, and we could do this there. Maybe even watch movies afterwards, eat lots of junk food.

Who's up for it?

I do hate to interrupt, [ comes the voice behind the network's latest entry. his voice is weighted down heavily by a distinct brand of southern drawl — georgia flavor, to those able to recognize it ] but seein' as I won't be goin' anywhere any time soon, I do believe proper introductions are in order. The name's Henry, and I hail from a small town called Purgatory. It was 2017, last I checked, but I don't suppose dates mean much in a "wondrous" place such as this.

[ yeah, the alice in wonderland references are completely lost on a man who missed out on not only the book's publishing, but all the disney adaptations that followed it. ]

You wouldn't happen to know if things you were... say, tethered to in your previous, less than wonderful life are still that way in this one, would you? I'm also interested in hearing what one does in Wonderland, other than wait for one of these so-called "events" to crop up, of course. A man of my specific skillset could get awful bored mighty fast without something worthwhile to entertain him.

[ Well, it's another newbie, but he's sure calm about this whole thing. There's not a whole lot Bucky needs to process here. When you work to combat supernatural wackos, well, you have to expect waking up in wacko places. ]

Huh. I've gotta say, this is probably the gentlest kidnapping I've ever experienced. And there's even a theme, which is a new twist on an old problem. I like captives who think outside the box! I'm not complaining! You know, makes this all a little less tedious, am I right?

[ Through the Looking Glass of all things, too! That is mainly why Bucky isn't taking this too seriously. This seems more like a weird dream or an illusion—Something he's experienced before within the literal head space of a powerful mutant. ]

Guess that makes me the latest and greatest catch, huh? Name's James, by the way! And if any ladies would like to give me a full tour around the prison grounds, I'd be much obliged.

[ later, after she's been briefed and has (mercifully) located her own damned room: ]

Good evening -- I understand the mansion is undergoing a spot of upheaval at the moment, so I'll be brief. Can someone lend me some steady hands and a bit of medical experience? Actually, simple first aid will more than suffice.

It's not an emergency. Rather, I've got some bandages that need changing. Nothing too fussy: abdomen, off-centre, and on a wound that was a clean through-and-through. Unfortunately, those bandages are a challenge to change alone. Believe you me, it's hardly my ideal way to make anyone's acquaintance.

That said,
[ down to brass tacks, ] I'd love to know what's the cause behind the current havoc. My arrival -- quite unwilling, although I'm told that's the way of this place -- seems to also be spectacularly ill-timed. What on earth is happening?

[ Billy is struggling with something off screen, being tugged at by some force not visible. He holds the camera up with one hand, the other hanging onto something out of sight. ]

People usually use these things to ask for advice, right? Or help? I think that's what I've seen people use it for. Anyway. Does anyone have an idea on how to get an invisible dog to listen to you? 'Cause I-- Hang on.

[ He scrambles with the camera for a minute, turning it around to show a leash and collar, connected to... nothing. There's nothing there. Well, there's something there, because the leash is being pulled to its limits, and there's the sound of growling coming from the end of it. ]

This is Fido. [ Billy says, as though there's anything there to be named Fido in the first place. ]

Fido, stop pulling! Fido, heel!

[ Fido does no such thing. Fido growls and barks and pulls some more. Defeated, Billy turns the camera back around. ]

Maybe I shouldn't've named him Fido. Maybe Killer is better. But he isn't listening to any name I say, so I don't think it's the name that matters. Anyway. I found him in my room, and I've never had a dog before, so I asked the closet for a leash, and I got it on him but I don't think he likes it.

[ Fido barks his displeasure. ] I know, I know! Fido, shh!

[ Billy, exasperated, ends the video. He can be found trying to take Fido for walks around the mansion grounds. Fido, for his part, doesn't want to go for a walk. He wants to growl and generally resist and sniff at the tears they pass. Those are weird, huh. ]

[Newt has certainly gotten much better with the device technology since his arrival. No fumbling, no odd framing this time. Instead he's trying to be rather professional as the camera comes on to send out the broadcast.]

Greetings, Wonderland and a good day to you. After the recent event with the space station, I found myself still in possession of a rather delightful creatures called a pyjack. I can't help but be curious if I'm the only one that found myself housing a space creatures.

Actually I'm curious about any creatures any might be caring for here in Wonderland. It is rather my area of expertise and I'm curious if any would be willing to let me observe and study their pets and creatures that I might continue my work here. Thank any and all for even considering this.

Which leads me to my second point today. In studying my pyjack, I've learned that they, or at least this one, seems to have a desire for obtaining bits and pieces of technology. I've no idea what most of them go to not having a knowledge of what most consider modern and advanced technology. If you're missing anything of the sort, there will be a basket outside of 926 on the ninth floor. I do apologize ahead of time, and please feel free to let me know if you are missing anything and I can try and check around for things.

Again, thank you all for your time.

[The video feed turns on to...wow, Turing is really close to the screen. The screen itself moves, as if they're adjusting it.]

There we go, the tablet should be steady now…

[Turing takes a step back and you can actually see them this time! They’re wearing a brown beret and a smudge of paint is on their right side of the system. Looks like they’ve been painting.]

Hello again, Wonderland. Adjusting to this place has been…difficult, although I have the feeling that this is a normal reaction to newcomers. I have taken a look at the network, specifically at previous network posts of people that are and were here, and it seems that this is the most common reaction for people just settling in. Nevertheless, I have tried to set a routine for myself. So, I’ve been painting again! I’ve missed doing it, and I’m both eager and anxious to show off a few of my pieces to the network.

I have so far created three pieces, two of which pertaining to the previous two events. I hope that you will be able to view these pieces with an open mind.

…oh, and I should also mention: don’t expect anything photorealistic. That’s too simple and not at all thought-provoking for me. I take a more abstract approach with my paintings. Without further ado…

[ Only a few of the lights in her room are on, casting shadows onto Sharon's face. If anyone looks closely, they may notice her eyes are dry, but red. She props the comm up, takes a breath, starts to speak, stops. Then takes another breath and tries again. She'd considered doing a text and had decided against it given the discussion that might follow, had considered doing an audio message but had thought people might notice her voice wobbling. Noooooooo. She just had to do video. She takes a deep breath. ]

Tony Stark has left Wonderland. [ She presses her lips together and swallows before she continues. ] He spoke on the network a while ago about creating a version of SHIELD here, I'd like to continue that. Not like he intended, though. Instead, I'd like to get a group together on a voluntary basis to meet in the tea rooms after each event to talk about what we did and things we could have done. This review means we'll be able to act more quickly in future events. We've had at least three zombie-based events since I got here - going over what we did right and wrong can't hurt at this point.

I also think it's important to get together with scientists and other people investigating things in Wonderland to share what we've all discovered. [ She glances away for a moment. ] Neither Tony and Romanoff, who helped him with this before, are here anymore, so it's up to me to get the ball rolling. If you have any criticisms, I'm sure none of you will hold back from expressing them to me. [ At least, she doesn't think they'll hold back given what they put Tony through. And yes, she's a little bitter that people were mean to her fully-grown, avenging, iron-helmeted, not-brother. ]

And just to be clear, since there were concerns about this when Tony tried to get it going, this isn't meant to be a takeover. He was inspired by SHIELD to form a unit to protect Wonderland - SHIELD and the Avengers were the two groups he had the most experience with when it came to protecting people, so he used them as inspiration in Wonderland. But two-thirds of the people who originally worked on the idea are already gone and there's no guarantee that I'll stick around. Ergo, the informal get-togethers to share information. No one really in charge, and an informal group means that the group is more likely to outlast any one person in the group.

So if you can, please get in touch to work with me on this. [ After that, the view further darkens as she reaches over the leans to turn off the camera. ]

[Oh look, it's that guy again. Yeah, you know the one. Or, maybe you don't. It doesn't matter. He's addressing everyone in Wonderland from a large, open room. It isn't his usual workshop, cluttered with tech. This looks more like a conference room...]

Some of you know me as Tony Stark. Some know me as Iron Man. Some know me as an Avenger. Some know me as just that pompous dillweed that keeps addressing the network like you should know me. Or, y'know, your Flying Professor. I'm all of those things, honestly. --except the professor. God forbid. No one in their right mind would let me teach kids. But more importantly, I'm observant.

See, as an Avenger, we're supposed to protect people. We're supposed to be there when you need us and I'm looking around right now, seeing mentions of deaths and honestly, we're doing a pretty shitty job at our job, aren't we? Granted, that was prior to our little magical vacation that I'm still coming to terms with. Anyway, it's true, we're just a few people with extraordinary skills, but we can't be everywhere at once. Some of us are too self-involved to notice when shit is going down around us and focusing on our own issues is putting us in a position to let everyone else down. For the record, that's me I'm talking about, not pointing fingers at anyone else.

So, when the mirrors dissolved several weeks ago and that massive influx of people flooded our not-so-peaceful little Wonderland, people died. I, myself, had a rather unpleasant interaction with my mirror and it occurred to me that I got off lucky. Now, you're probably thinking, What does this jerk know about my plight? Okay, fair enough. But I've seen whispers of mentions of needing a police force, or some way to hold people accountable for their actions in the past. Nothing very put together seemed to have been done about it. Until now.

Where I'm from, you have an organisation called SHIELD. Strategic Homeland--well, the acronym doesn't really matter, because it's an ideal. Yeah, there is always trouble in paradise, but having lived it, I know what to look for. SHIELD, Wonderland Division, would be an active group of people you could call upon for help. A research and development team would work on ways to passify rogue mirrors that happen to our side of town. We'd look for ways to help you without pushing the boundaries of invasiveness. It's a delicate balance, and I'm not saying it would be easy. There will be trial and error. There will be people who disagree--there always are. But I'm proposing a possible solution to work alongside the Avengers to protect the people.

Anyone with skill and proper training would be eligible. You'd have to be willing to be on call and you'd have to be willing to put aside some of your time to train with other skilled agents. I'd outfit everyone with the most effective, lightweight gear with the only stipulation being you use it to help, not hurt. Any abuse of power would be dealt with swiftly. If you think I can't deactivate my own tech, you'd be wrong. I once hosted a spectacular Christmas fireworks show using my own suits. I want this to work. I want Wonderland to be as safe as we can possibly make it so we can focus all our resources working to keep the public safe when Wonderland throws its little events at us.

If you're interested, please contact me. If you have any questions or concerns, I'm here to answer them. I've already constructed an emergency call line that will, with the help of a special device, transmit your location in relation to transponders I've located in a grid across the grounds. One press and a specialised team will dispatch to your area immediately. It's not a flawless system, and I have my doubts it will do much good during these events, but it's something.

Consider this the act of someone who has made his fair share of mistakes and wants to do what he can to prevent future ones.

Stark out.

[He has found himself in the library, again, as he often does and those who are regular visitors to the place might have noticed his peculiar habit of apparently not sleeping. Instead, Regis spends much of his time poring over books both familiar and not so, and it has led him to several interesting avenues of research.

That, in part, is why he now addresses the mansion population. Often forgetting that he has the ability to use it, much of the network goings on pass him by, but he certainly isn't about to forego its usefulness when it comes to gaining a wide variety of views and opinions all at once.
]

Even where I came here from, people often do not believe things before seeing them with their own eyes - monsters, magic - though those things exist daily in the world around them. If they do believe.. there are often... problematic misconceptions.

[He smiles. It's small and quick and doesn't show his teeth.]

If you come from a world with magic, how does it manifest itself? What creatures do you commonly see? If you do not.. does it exist in your world's various mythoi as something which gives some level of meaning to different cultures?

[And he wonders, too, just what kinds of things could be brought forth from other worlds should magic exist in them. Simply knowing what might come from his own makes him fear for the people here.]

Do forgive the questioning.. but one begins to pick up interesting hobbies in a place like this.

So to everyone who told me things about home and decided to leave out a rather large personal detail, very funny. You know who you are. [ Steve, Wilson, Barnes. She especially means you. She doesn't think Wanda knows about the kiss, so Wanda gets a pass.

[ Ruth's far from a fan of showing her face on the network, but for the purposes of this particular broadcast, it's what makes most sense. Whereas some people might recognize her voice, others could just not make the connection, and she knows a face is likelier to trigger people's memories.

Doesn't mean she still doesn't feel and look awkward, though. A little too exposed for her taste. But anyway. ]

Hi. Uh... I'm Ruth Banner. I know I've been here a couple of times before. In Wonderland. I don't remember any of it, but so far I've met a few people who seem to know me, or at least know of me. So I've been wondering who here recognizes me, and those who do, what exactly do you know about me? I'd just feel a whole lot more comfortable being aware of how well people here know me.

[ Which is to say, she mostly is getting a little too paranoid about who knows or has seen the Hulk before. So best to get it out of the way by simply asking. ]

On another note: I know people are starting to get worried about a possible event following that announcement, and while I haven't experienced that many events so far, I've had it pointed out to me that sometimes they can change our minds, appearances, histories— everything, basically. So for all we know it might be happening right now and we're not even aware of it.

Not that that changes much, I know. [ She smiles weakly. ] Guess we'll have to wait and see.

» ACTION

[ After the late night broadcast, and still having difficulty falling asleep, Ruth decides to take advantage of the silence around the mansion and goes for a walk. The hallways and grounds are dipped in darkness, but she can be found walking down the corridors and around the gardens for a while, finally going to the kitchen and making herself a cup of tea. She's sitting on one of the stools, with her head propped on her hand, elbow on the counter, gaze unfocused as she pays little attention to her surroundings, apparently lost in her own thoughts. ]

Now, I get what you were going for here, but I must say, it’s just not working for me at all. Where’s the music? The entertainment? The escapism? Most people go to a bar to get away from their problems and the mediocrity of their lives, not to be surrounded by another place as equally drab and boring!

[Lucifer is clearly at the bar, and while it’s likely quite lovely and fine, this is The Devil we’re talking about. He’s not satisfied with much that he doesn’t do himself.]

This won’t do at all! Do you even have anyone hooking up in this bar or does everyone walk back to their rooms sad, alone and feeling sorry for themselves? It’s pathetic, really.

[He suddenly appears as if he’s had a revelation of sorts, though honestly he probably started this knowing exactly where he was taking it.]

Never fear, citizens of Wonderland. I’ll make sure you’re all able to partake in some real debauchery very soon.

Steve’s in civilian wear, his expression composed and collected. He isn’t here to give out orders or make any speeches, though. ]

So it looks like Wonderland sent all three of us home at once. Sorry about that. [ As if they had any control over it. ] But we’re back now and more or less in one piece. [ Which isn’t the full story at all, but that isn’t something that needs to be shared with all of Wonderland.

Natasha pushes away from the wall at this and moves closer into the frame of the video, leaning on the back of the couch over Steve’s shoulder, expression mild. ]
I don’t know if any others of us were sent home recently, but if so, letting us know would be greatly appreciated.

[ Her lips quirk briefly. ] Either way, I think some of us will need to be assembling for a SitRep soon regardless. But we wanted to let you know we were back to keep people from worrying.

[It had been the right thing to do. For everyone. He wasn't safe, couldn't trust himself, and while he hadn't wanted to do it, it had been the only choice. But he's been in and out of cryostasis enough to know when coming out this time isn't the same. It's not just the breeze on his skin causing his too-long hair to dance across his forehead, or the sweet, dry smell of fruit trees. No, it's the way he wakes up. Slow, naturally, like he'd slept the whole night through, and there's nothing normal about that.

The communication device his fingers are curled around doesn't bother him. Bucky's used to not remembering things, but the stalls and the vendors with their strange shapeless masks who stand nearby do. He walks past one, their face completely smooth, as featureless as a blank wall, and his breath catches in his throat, freezing him in place. There's a million explanations going through his mind and none of them make any sense except one and he doesn't want to think about that.

It takes a vender getting too close before he snaps out of it long enough to go through the motions. Better clothes, sweats and a white tank aren't cutting it, and a relatively safe place to hide so he can figure things out, grabbing a pamphlet on the way.

Bucky's face is half-hidden when the feed starts, voice low, and he wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't necessary. He was on shaky ground and he needed something to steady him.]

Name's Bucky. I'm looking for someone. Steve Rogers.

[It's risky to put it out there like that. He doesn't know these people and he's been alive long enough to know that even the prettiest people with the brightest smiles can be hiding the worst lies and secrets. But he needs to find someone he remembers. Everything is muddled and this place looks like something his mind has made up.]

He might go by Captain America.

[Just in case he's alone in Wonderland, he adds a little more.]

If someone could tell me what the hell's going on here, I'd appreciate it.

[There's a brief pause. He considers mentioning the obvious physical difference that would set him apart, but they'll figure it out when they see him.]

[Yes, hello network! Fellow captives of Wonderland, a very intent face is greeting you a little closer than what one would call normal, but not so close that his face doesn't fit in the screen. He seems to be staring very, very sceptically at the camera, as if he isn't aware he's being filmed. Except, he's very aware he's being filmed.

More than aware, this is deliberate. And that much is obvious when he suddenly just smirks almost knowingly. The face pulls back, he lifts a single eyebrow then lets it fall back down again in a quick gesture, waves a the screen, and ends the feed without saying a word. The message would get across to anyone who knew his face, and the message was a simple one: Roll Call!

He's also fishing for attention from anyone curious enough to respond. He's confident in his ability to draw attention to himself without saying a single word.]

There's a fading purple bruise just above the high collar of his vest; it obviously isn't fresh, but he's fighting to control his breathing, like he just got into a fight. He closes his eyes briefly, takes a breath. ]

Some of you might have noticed that people around the mansion are losing their memories, becoming violent, attacking friends... And these - [ He holds up a red banner with a particular logo on it. ] Have started to show up in the hallways. They belong to an organization called HYDRA. They're from my world - from my memory.

[ He looks directly into the camera. His expression turns softer, something weary in eyes. He knows he's addressing the whole mansion, but he's speaking to a few people in particular, too. ]

HYDRA wants you to believe that you're working for the greater good. They tell you they can put a stop to all of the violence and the chaos. [ Another breath. It's been almost a year, and he still feels cold sweat prickling at his spine, talking about this. ] They'll tell you that you need to help them do it, and once all of the dirty work is done with, we'll have peace. They'll tell you that you're doing good by helping them, that there's a reason for it. They'll say whatever it takes to get you to believe them and excuse the things that they do.

Listen to me - I've been there. It's not true, no matter how much you might want to believe it.

This is what they do.

[ He moves to the side. Behind him, a chair is visible. It has straps built into it, obviously made to hold someone with considerable strength, and a halo of machinery ringed around the top of it. There are monitors arrayed nearby, currently silent. ]

They use this to brainwash people. You forget everything - your history, friends, family - right down to your name. Your entire existence revolves around HYDRA and furthering their cause. They don't want peace, they want obedience.

Anyone they can't manipulate or brainwash, they'll kill.

[ He exhales softly. ]

I'm sorry I brought this down on your heads. If you still know who you are, be careful. Switch rooms if you can. Lock up and stay safe.

[ He touches the edge of the monitor, thinking he's turned it off.

He walks over to the chair and stands in front of it for a long moment, the fingers of his left hand skimming the machinery. It's been months, and even after all he's just said, he knows that if he lets them take him, it's back to quiet oblivion. He wouldn't have to think about what his memory has done to Steve, and what it will do to so many people who have nothing to do with it. They could just wipe him, start again.

If HYDRA taught him anything well, it's that anything he cares for, he will lose. Being what he is, he has no right to it. How many times did he convince himself, in the end, that pain was a necessary lesson? He was nothing. It was better that way. He was a weapon.

Maybe this is his reward for daring to think he could be more than that.

There's a metal-on-metal screech as James' fist tightens. He rips the upper half of the machinery off the chair, then swings it into the bank of monitors nearby. He could take the whole damn thing apart with his bare hands, but he stops there, watching the sparks fly, his expression utterly blank.

The terrible truth is that he doesn't feel angry, seeing the chair again for the first time.

He feels a bitter, self-hating kind of regret. ]

[ This is probably not the time or the place for this kind of thing, but that doesn't seem to be stopping John from addressing the network. First, he holds up a drawing for the camera. ]

This is a baseball diamond—[ His face appears a moment later as he pulls away the drawing. ] —used to play baseball, which is a game for those that might not know. If it's not familiar, that's okay — I can teach you — but if it is familiar, I'd like to know that, too.

We're talkin' a ball, a bat, a big field, some players — two teams of nine's standard, but you could make due with five an' five — and an afternoon to play. That's all. [ He almost sounds like he's — hehe — making a pitch by the way it rolls off his tongue. John smiles, tipping his head a little. ] And some rules, of course.

[ He brings the picture back up as he continues his explanation, his voice hurried in such a way that he's certain to confuse anyone trying to follow along at home. ]

The goal is to hit the ball with the bat so it goes between these foul lines and then to make your way 'round this diamond, crossin' one of each of these "bases" — first, second, third, in that order, but not necessarily all at once — 'til you get to the last one, called home plate. Crossing home plate earns you a point. The team with the most points wins.

[ John's face appears again as the drawing disappears off-screen once more. ]

Simple, right?

So, if you're interested in playin' a game or two — even just watchin' one to take your mind offa things for a bit — lemme know.

Or, if you wanna toss the ball 'round for a bit, come out front. That's where I'll be 'til it gets too dark.

[[ OOC: Since we're probably not going to actually play out any baseball games, there's a sign up area in the comments if your character wants to be involved. You are absolutely welcome to sign up characters without tagging into this post — there is no obligation to thread here in order to be involved.  If I get enough characters signed up, then I'll do a mock game with a random outcome and post the results here, probably in the OOC community! ]]

[ The feed opens with James looking a little different than usual. His usual mess of long hair has been trimmed short and neat, combed into place in a familiar style. For once, he's even clean-shaven. He doesn't look exactly the way some people might remember. Too much has changed for that. Most obviously, the metal of his left arm is visible just below the sleeve of the t-shirt that he wears. It's a constant reminder of who and what he is now, but there's a reason he isn't covering it up.

At the moment, he's all business. He leans his weight back in the chair and scrubs a hand over his face; this being in front of a camera and talking to a crowd stuff still feels ridiculous. There are about ten different alarms going off at the back of his mind telling him that he needs to hide his location, his face, his intentions better than this. He really isn't cut out for this kind of thing. He doesn't know how Steve does it. ]

In light of the last couple of events, I've got a couple of... Requests. I'd like to trade notes with anyone who's working on an index of threats we've faced, or might face from different worlds, and how to fight them. With the closets acting up like this on top of everything else, we're playing a risky game scrambling to meet things as they come. I realize memorizing an index isn't really a viable option for most people so... I had another idea.

[ He takes a breath. He probably hasn't said this many words in a row since he got back here. ]

A few weeks ago, Captain America posted a list with descriptions of the Avengers, their abilities, and how to contact them. I'd like to do something similar. I'm not talking about a team, just something like... pooling our resources. I want to make a list of people who are willing and able to take civilians in, and protect them when things get tough. That could be combat, or it could be something like warding a panic room, or rationing supplies if the closets keep acting up. I don't know if anyone is working on the welcome pamphlets since Pepper went home, but knowing who to contact in case of, I dunno, zombies -- might be the kind of thing that's worth including.

[ He rubs the side of his neck. ] Anyway, that's about it.

While I'm here, if you're training with me and you're still injured from the last event, report in. Otherwise, training resumes tomorrow morning on your usual schedule. Those of you who might want to take the holiday to slack on your conditioning: don't. [ He's looking at you, Billy. ]

Oh, and just in case anyone missed it, it's Steve Rogers' birthday today. Every joke you're gonna make is about 97 years old, but feel free to make 'em anyway. He's used to it.

[She doesn't want to drag this out. Not after losing Jane so soon. It had started when she went down to the training room to find Natasha, see if she was up for picking up the training where they left off. When she couldn't find her, it was followed by a text that didn't go through. Some slight panic and wandering later and... No Natasha. Her room was empty. So, she went to find Pepper since she and Bucky had made the announcement when Nat and Steve went home for a little bit. Try and check in to see if she'd seen any of the others - talk to the other person that wrangled.

Strike number two and another empty room.

She knew how this place worked, that if the stuff was gone then they were gone. It feels like it was just yesterday when Thor announced Jane leaving. Needing to take a few moments before even thinking about going back upstairs to check if everyone else was still here, she slips into a room on the 1st floor she'd claimed after Jane left. Something she kept to herself as an escape from everything and everyone - a safe place she could go to deal with everything. The room behind her when she starts the video is unrecognizable... Which is what she was going for. Something that isn't gonna remind her of everything and everyone or a little while. She has her glasses on, another rare sight, but it was hard to deal with contacts when there was crying. There's a distinct redness to her eyes and hoarseness to her voice. Enough to tip off that the switch to glasses might have happened after the initial out-pour of emotions - when it became a move of necessity rather than careful planning.]

Natasha and Pepper are gone. Their rooms are empty and - [/awkward cough. Time to keep this short and to the point.] The coffee shop's gonna be running on auto-pilot for a little while. Anything massive happens, I guess, let me know. But I need a few weeks away from... I just need a little time. I set it up so it could be pretty self-sufficient, so - yeah.

I guess if you were training with Natasha, let me know and I can try to hook you up with someone else to pick up where she left off. I know there's more than a few other people here who might be willing to jump in and help out. I... [That should be it, right? She didn't know if Pepper had any big projects happening right now, didn't want to rehash the same spiel she did when Jane left. She almost adds something else to the post, instead shaking her head and promptly ending the feed.]

[ the video clicks on at a slight angle. Thor's face is visible in frame; behind him, occasionally visible, Darcy is moving around the room they're both in.

it is the room that previously belonged to Jane.

for a moment, Thor almost seems to be avoiding the video's "eyes", then he visibly forces himself to meet them. he gives a wan smile ]

For those who knew her, Jane Foster has-- [ there it is, a break in his voice; his eyes crinkle slightly at the corners, tension, and he continues ] ...gone home.

[ he glances back at Darcy over his shoulder, and his voice is lower but still audible ] Is there anything you want to...? [ say, goes unfinished. ]

[ Darcy comes closer to the video feed, and addresses it with a tight-lipped smile ]

If there were any projects you were working on with Jane, everything she had in the lab is gone but you might be able to talk to the vendors about getting some of it back...

[ she turns back to Thor, and her hand lands briefly on his arm; the gentleness of it surprises him, and he blinks at her uncertainly. they are both hurting. he knew that, but still... before he can think of a good enough response for that small but appreciated gesture, she's backing off again, her eyes sliding away. ]

I'm gonna take the dogs out for a walk.

[ she bends down, scoops up one of Jane's puppies, and makes for the door. a soft whine from the puppy follows their exit.

Thor tries to recover his equilibrium, and re-addresses the video. ]

I also -- wanted to make an offer. I know that we have many powerful people here, some who -- might feel they are unmatched. [ or, you know, dangerous. he had a whole speech prepared for this, actually, between his conversations with Bruce and Bucky... but the words have gone out of his head. ]

I wanted... to offer myself, as sparring partner. To anyone who has difficulty finding someone they can go... "all out" with, so to speak. Or... if for any reason, you would like assistance from someone with as much or more power as you have...

[ that'll have to do. his voice trails away, and he forces a final smile before clicking off the video. ]

[It’s the sort of announcement no one desires to make, even if it’s not the worst brand of broadcast to be sent out over the network. Still, Pepper has to take a moment even after she turns on the feed, showing her along with Bucky standing just behind her. There’s no avoiding it, in the same way that there are no right words to temper the impact of what she has to say, what it could potentially mean for those still in Wonderland.

She just has to hope that the circumstances themselves offer enough hope to make the wait less of a weary one.]

Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff both have gone back home, although their possessions are still here. [Meaning that in a week’s time, the two should return. She tries not to think of what they might be coming back from, since all of them tend to be drawn from around the time of some major catastrophe back home.] We know they had taken on some responsibilities around the mansion, so…

[Now she glances back at Bucky, shifting the phone so the focus switches to him. Yet she’s watchful, ready to continue her thought should he need her to; after all, she can’t remember him making an announcement over the network like this since he came back from his own trip home.]

[ James schools his expression into something neutral the moment she begins the broadcast. He isn’t going to broadcast any uncertainties he might have over the network. He takes the phone from her hand when she’s finished, so he doesn’t need to loom over her shoulder. ]

So we think they’d want to see those responsibilities fulfilled, at least partly, even while they’re gone.

[ They may be gone for as little as a week, but there’s no telling what kind of shape they’ll come back in, if they come back at all. He takes a breath. ]

My name is Bucky Barnes. If you were taking combat lessons from Steve or Natasha and you’d like to continue through the week, feel free to contact me. If you were taking lessons from me several months ago and you’d like to start again, we can talk about that too.

My skillset is pretty specific, but I’ll do what I can to help with anything else.

[ He glances briefly at Pepper, and the broadcast ends there. ]

therapize: (don't pretend it isn't)
[personal profile] therapize
[Some might say that this is the worst time for this; after the past few days, few weeks, it's clear just how present and real the danger in the mansion is. Too many of her friends have been torn apart, left broken, bloody, and dead, and the fatigue is clear in Cami's eyes even as she turns on the camera.

But that's the very reason that pushes her forward: she needs to do something to fix this, in whatever small way she can manage. She isn't a hunter or a witch or some supernatural, immortal hybrid. She's just a person who happens to be pretty good at listening. So that's what she has in mind, the phone propped up so she can step back and offer a smile.]

Hey, Wonderland. I don't know how many of you remember, but way back when I brought up the idea of starting a therapy practice here. Then things got crazy, which hasn't exactly stopped, but that's all the more reason to make good on that idea. So, here it is.

[She motions to the room around her, one decorated with plush chairs and a not-so-traditional psychiatrists couch. Of course there are other unseen surprises, devil's traps near the door and under the rug in the seating area, water of both the holy and vervain-laced varieties hidden with easy reach, iron rods placed behind paintings and wherever else she can think of. As much as she wants the place to be a sanctuary, she also wants it to be escapable should things come to that point.]

Sixth floor, room twenty. During the day is probably best, but if you want to meet at another time, get in touch and we'll work something out. Everything is confidential, with the caveat that I'm not going to let people get hurt or killed if I can help it. I'll have a sign up if there's already a session going on, but other than that, feel free to knock.

[Since someone knows better than to give vampires blanket invitations to enter.]

Alternately, someone brought up the very good idea of support groups, in particular one for people who have died in some form or fashion. It's a pretty unique form of survivor's guilt, one that I doubt most people are prepared for. So maybe it might help just to meet with other people who have been through it, and are trying to figure out the best way to move forward.

[Hopefully, it catches. Cami wouldn't mind a chance to talk about some of her own problems.]

Anyway, if there's enough interest, we can figure out a time to meet. Again, everything would need to be kept confidential; the whole idea of this is to provide a safe place where people can talk about whatever they're going through, to work out issues and even try to resolve some things. So much about what's been terrible in Wonderland lately is what we've been doing to each other. In whatever way each person can, they have to fight against that--and sometimes that can be as simple as talking to someone after a tragedy, or before one happens.

So the offer's out there--and I think that's it for now. Thanks for listening.

[She'll be there, at least for a few hours following. Of course she's on guard, given that Dean is still wandering around, but she doesn't want to spend more time hiding than actually doing any good. Maybe it's just one of those stupidly prideful things, but Cami refuses to let all of the chaos take this part of her life from her.

But there's also something else she has to do in order to clean house; for a sake of a conversation that's long overdue, she sends a private message out to Davina Claire.]
