[Maxine looks as stiff an uncomfortable in this transmission as she ever has. It's obvious from the start, to those who know her - she's carefully framed the shot, put on a clean and wrinkle-free white coat, and even a fairly businesslike collared shirt underneath.

Dress for the level of professionalism you want. Not the level of professionalism you've displayed over the past week.]

Wonderland, I'd just like to take this opportunity to formally apologize to anyone I practiced medicine on while amnesic, recently.

[Oh, the places you go. And the things that those places will force you to say.]

As far as I can remember, my procedural memory was basically intact, so I don't think I treated anyone inappropriately. But just in case - if anyone I treated would be willing to come into the clinic for a follow up, I would really appreciate it.

Like she said, Maxine did a pretty decent job with anyone who came in during the week post-event, but would have been awful at knowing who they were or explaining why she did anything she did.)

[ Natasha had scratches, literal ones. Nothing serious in her experience, but it pays to know who's around doing what. Any blood samples, she'd have burnt as soon as possible. ]

The cut's healing well. If I didn't know better, I'd've said you were a doctor.

[ Lightly said; followed by a faint smile. ]

[Maxine grins in relief, head dropping a few degrees.]

So, same boat I was in.

[At the time, all the evidence had been there that she was a doctor, and doctoring had felt very natural, so . . . why not? Especially for something as minor as little cuts and abrasions.]

That's good to hear. No redness or swelling, nothing leaking out-?

None. You cleaned it well.

[She laughs to herself]

So long have you been here?

A little over two months. Yourself?

[She pauses, thinking a moment before a small epiphany breaks on her expression.]

Oh- man. It's actually been a year. A little over, even. Time flies, I guess.

When you're having fun?

[ Her expression turns wry. ]

That. And when Wonderland makes it impossible to keep any kind of research going.

[Rest in peace, at least a dozen failed attempts at cell culture.]

At least we have a good library. And a thriving hobby economy.

You weren't only a doctor of medicine, at home?

Oh - you mean a clinician? No, I've always been interested in research, too. Mostly immunology and infectious disease, but that isn't stopping me from trying to figure out the effects of Wonderland on human physiology.

So, you don't believe this is magic.

[She draws in a slow breath through her teeth, exhaling a measured one-two-three-four count before replying. This place always makes the answer to that complicated.]

If we were back in the world I come from? I'd refuse to believe there was such a thing as magic. But here, where even basic natural laws don't all seem to be agreeing-? At the very least, it's a good word to put to it until there's a better explanation.

[ She pauses, but not long enough to betray contempt instead of reluctance. ]

I agree. I'm not one for believing in magic, however.

[ Or trusting it very much. ]

The Queen brings scholars and fighters but very few scientists. One wonders.

["Shake hands and move on" is absolutely Maxine's prefered way of dealing with this stuff, and it's good to see she lucked into treating people who are in the same camp.

She lifts an eyebrow at that barb, smile wry.]

What were you expecting, a wizard?

[ she nods at that, smile remaining in place. it's nice, in wonderland. all the general open knowledge of things that go bump without all the pesky slayer hate. ]

Didn't expect anything at the time; didn't even know my own name. Sorry for the crabass attitude, by the way. Guess my problems with authority didn't get the amnesia memo.

If it wasn't for the amnesia, I imagine you would've remembered that 'authority' is a pretty tenuous concept here in Wonderland anyway. [She grins, because hey. It is kind of funny.] What am I going to do, withhold a prescription for something you could pull out of any of the wardrobes?

I know! [Finally, someone who knows the struggle of having all of their pop culture shoutouts fall flat.] There are way too many universes in here, sometimes. And it's not like there's any TV or movies in here for people to make new references to.

For real. I feel like I gotta speak Middle English just to get anyone to understand me. [ ok well normal modern english not rife with incoherent slang is probably more accurate but faith's not quite that discerning. ] Guess I gotta get my head whammied more often.

I'd say there has to be a middle ground . . . but I'm pretty sure that the most popular establishment in the mansion is the bar. So a lot of people probably agree with you there.

You gotta figure the mansion gets off on it, though. Lot of different worlds? Probably pretty entertaining from the right perspective.

[Helena wasn't treated, but The Dark One is curious about how this happened. She died, so she's out of the loop on the memories situation.]

You didn't remember being a doctor, but you remembered how to be a doctor?

. . . basics. I remembered procedures. How to clean a wound, put in sutures. When something looked infected. I couldn't tell you where I learned it, and I'm sure if you'd asked me about a lot of my research I wouldn't have had a clue. But stuff I've done so many times it doesn't even take thinking about - I pretty much held onto that.

This did not concern you at the time or you simply had no chance to dwell?

[She almost wonders if she could have changed it. If she could have...altered people’s memories in any way.]

Hey, I woke up not knowing my own name. I was definitely concerned. But all the clues suggested I was a doctor, and things still seemed pretty rough around the mansion. I guess the reasoning was that I should use whatever I did remember to help out.

And now...you remember everything, and you also remember that you...didn't remember.

[She gives a bit of a smirk, shaking her head a bit.]

I would say this place is wild and unpredictable, but we all know this by being here.

[Wirt has like no idea what he could possibly say to that at first. Honestly, he'd just assumed that she'd forgotten him entirely which...apparently isn't far from the truth, but he hadn't thought she'd forgotten everything.]

Uhh...you did a good job with me, I think? I-I mean, I don't know a ton about medicine but I'm not..worse or anything. A-And at least someone was around to help...?

[He would be more bothered, and probably should be more bothered, but...well, she did retain all her medical knowledge, so it probably could have been a lot worse.]

Oh- thank goodness. I was hoping you were doing all right.

[And ready to try to start tracking him down, having of course not given him a follow-up date. On top of the relief, she looks appropriately mortified over the video, worried for this kid she'd treated for a puncture wound without remembering most of her pharmacology.]

I am so sorry. I did the stitches all right, but I really should be keeping a closer eye on your leg to make sure you don't need antibiotics. Not to mention I should have given you something for the pain.

[Honestly, he wasn't expecting her to be so mortified, so he really has no idea what to do with that apology.]

It's...it's okay. I've just been staying off of it anyway so it wasn't so bad. And it definitely feels better than it did? Y-You don't have to be sorry. I totally didn't even know you'd lost your memory, and I mean I should have thought to like...ask, or something.

[To be totally honest, he wasn't even aware painkillers would be an option somehow. It didn't even dawn on him at the time that he could have probably asked for something a little stronger than closet ibuprofen.]

[She settles down a little at that. Doesn't worry an ounce less, but . . . it's good to know he's been taking care of himself. That it wasn't as bad as it could have been. She does her best to smile back, expression half rueful.]

No offense, but I'm pretty sure excuse me doc, but do you have any amnesia today? isn't what most people are asking when they come in to have a wound treated.

[That actually gets a tiny laugh out of Wirt, but he covers his mouth to try and hide it.]

Well...I guess that's true. It probably wasn't relevant or anything. A-And it doesn't matter, since it's apparently back?

[So, there's no need to go into the whole "I thought I had made so small an impression that you literally forgot meeting me at all" thing. He can just quietly pretend he has more self-esteem than that.]
