video ; diary 1 ; the best part of waking up is what where the fuck am i
[ Daniel wakes up in his hotel room in the village of Altstadt. He is definitely in Altstadt, and certainly not in a room in Wonderland which has styled itself to look exactly the same. And, it logically follows, this room is definitely not broadcasting a video of him without his knowledge or consent.
THAT ESTABLISHED,
Daniel springs out of a restless sleep and sits up on the edge of his bed, blinking in the morning light. It must be earlier than it looks, because nobody has come to knock him up, and he definitely asked to be knocked up at 7am promptly. He was very clear in asking to be knocked up.
They'd better not have forgotten. Might they have done? This is sort of a ghetto guest-house, if you want his honest opinion. There's not even a bell he can ring to call a servant.
Okay, Daniel doesn't have time to be annoyed by the inconveniences of rural life. His thoughts are too full of the last leg of his journey, which will be undertaken today, to the castle where he might finally find some safety -- so he stands up quickly, steps away from the bed. Lacking a clock, he just assumes he's late, and starts to undress hurriedly out of his woolen cap and night-shirt.
The network is still definitely not there, but if it were, it would probably now be broadcasting an early Victorian strip tease. ]

While he's buttoning his waistcoat, Daniel notices something blue on the mirror. A closer look reveals that it's writing, but -- backwards, as if da Vinci had been making notes on it and dotting them with love-hearts. For a moment he's sure that it wasn't there last night, or even when he first woke up. But, nah, that's silly. He was rushed and tired, he must've just missed it. Writing doesn't write itself, right?

Okay, so admittedly it would be easier to convince himself of that if his life hadn't lately taken a left turn into weird.
Equal parts quizzical and unnerved, he tries to smudge the words with his finger, and finds that he can make no impression on them. ]

Daniel snatches his hand away as if he's been burned. ]

[ And backs away too, for good measure. ]
Pardon me? [ he demands of... an inanimate object hanging on the wall. Oh god. ]

If he believed in curses, WHICH HE DOESN'T, he would fear that this has something to do with the one that seems to have been dogging him since Algeria. But as a man of reason, he has to guess that it's, um... Perhaps he's still asleep and dreaming. Perhaps this is, uh, well he doesn't want to suspect it but maybe this is one of his... minor turns.
Either way, the writing can't be real, and that makes him feel a little better because if it's not real then it doesn't matter that it doesn't make a bit of sense. ]
Ah...
[ He quickly does up the final few waistcoat buttons and grabs for his shoes. ]
Forgive me. [ He's talking to a mirror. ] If this is not a dream, then I am tried for time. [ Stop talking to the mirror, Daniel. ]

[She of course is asking this instead of telling him there's nowhere to go.]

Daniel proceeds to rudely ignore the mirror as he hurries to put on his shoes. And by 'ignore', I mean he gives it about a million anxious glances to see if the writing has gone away, but doesn't actually reply in case he encourages it. ]

...! Then she gets bored of that and starts writing again:]

Now fully dressed, Daniel opens the door as if to escape the room. Unfortunately, it turns out that the corridor outside is not the one from the rundown hotel. It's not any corridor he recognises at all.
He stops, stares -- and slams the door. Then he turns towards the mirror again, looking a bit haunted. ]

[ Setting aside the ridiculous of a talking mirror: if it's a real thing, it seems to know more about the situation than he does. (Maybe there's somebody behind it, in a hidden room, writing? It's not impossible.) ]

He gives the door a wary look, to make sure nobody's walking in on him talking to himself. ]

[ BUT. ] If you are real, Mr. Mell -- a-and I am still not sure of that, [ he adds, so that he can feel like less of a fool if he's punking himself, ] -- please be kind enough as to show yourself and speak to me properly.
[ That seems like a fair test, right? Of course he's working on the assumption that Mell means she's in a room on the other side of the mirror, which is technically true but not usefully so. ]
