[wynonna does not use the network often, and as she does so she's sort of making an informal wedding announcement, though she does not mean to, as her actual focus will become apparent soon.]

So. Has anyone just had the closets go completely rogue on them? Because I was looking for things to help me plan a wedding and somehow I ended up with this instead:

[she moves the camera to show off the siamese kitten she dug out of the closet along with some toys she pulled out for it after because she felt bad for it. it seemed so bored and restless.]

It's so cute I'd feel bad sending it back so I guess I am a cat-mom now? Which means this little lady needs a name. I'm pretty sure she's a lady -- I didn't see any balls on her.

Okay, so if anyone is still paying attention to this, I have a question: it's my fiancé's birthday in a couple of weeks and I have no idea what to get him and when I asked for anon advice about him last year it worked out okay, so maybe owning up to needing the help this time will work too. Just what do you get for someone who is turning 167 anyway?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As someone soon to be 100 [ technically. ], perhaps I can help? You may also be over-thinking it. But tell me what he likes to do when the mansion isn't trying to kill us all or turning is into things we aren't.

Doc likes to tend to horses, drink whiskey, read, play poker-- things like that. He's also really good at shooting things and stuff like that but I wouldn't necessarily call those things he likes to do.

In my experience, it's not about value or much else beyond sentiment. A beautiful brand new saddle, a bottle of very good and hard to get whiskey, leather-bound copies of his favorite books. Those things might mean more to him than you think, especially coming from someone who knows him well enough to think of it.

Everyone gives him booze, and I run one of the bars here, so I feel like that wouldn't go very far, but a nice saddle or something might be a good call, not that I would know where to begin in picking one out.

I wouldn't mind helping. He and I are both familiar with a time when a good saddle was the difference between comfort and walking crooked for a while after a ride.

I'd appreciate it -- it'd be a good start. He spends so much time out with the horses he'd probably enjoy a better one.

[ Even with Jamie gone, her room is still a miniature approximation of Lallybroch. It was the only place where she ever truly felt home, and should Jamie ever return, if he ever returns, she doesn't want anything to have changed. Her lighting is candles, though it's bright enough thanks to scones and the windows during the day somehow letting sunlight shine in despite the location of the room within the mansion.

Opening the door, she smiles at Wynonna and steps aside. ]

Please, come inside. I'm glad I can try to help with a gift.

[it's an impressive looking place, that's for sure. a little old fashioned for wynonna's taste, but cool if you're into that sorta thing. she smiles at the other woman.]

I appreciate it -- I haven't really done a lot of this kinda stuff, and he always goes really overboard for me, it's a little hard to compete with.

My husband does the same.

[ She smiles, a little sadly before leading the way to the closet. ]

Men are impossible to find gifts for anyway, just be glad you don't live in the past. I never quite knew what to do for Jamie. But a saddle is something that every person who rides a horse needs and can appreciate, considering they never think to get new ones until they have to. I'm going to assume that 'flashy' isn't quite your betrothed's style?

No, flashy is definitely not Doc's style. And I may not be in the past but he is from the past -- which does make things a little complicated picking out gifts for him. I know some of the ones I've given him in the past I've had to explain to him first.

For my birthday last year he had trained a horse for me -- so he kinda sets the standard pretty impossibly high. Though I could give him a bag of rocks and he would love those rocks because they're from me.

[ Claire laughs softly, and it's affectionate as she looks at Wynonna. ]

Jamie's the same way, and yet I try very hard to find him something just a bit better than painted rocks.

[ Standing in front of the closet, she thinks for a moment, then pulls out a saddle that reminds her of the elaborate - but not fanciest - type she'd seen in France. ]

Where does the bar land for formalities on this one? Too much?

Yeah, I'm trying to too -- just because I could give him a pet rock doesn't mean I should.

[though now she kinda wants to do that too and see how doc responds.

I think so? I think he probably looks for something more practical than fancy.

Well, now we've set a bar at least.

[ Claire does chuckle a little though because yes, this is reminding her of Jamie through and through. ]

What about this? Only a little bit of detailing, nothing too obvious.

Doc is a lovesick fool -- but it's part of what I love about him. I've never had someone accept me like that before.

[wynonna has spent most of her life feeling less than and undeserving of love and to have the unconditional love of someone like doc -- well it's done her a word of good. in ways she knows she'll never really be able to replay, but she can try.]

That seems more his style -- I think the darker tones suit him better too.

[ Claire sets that one aside as one to go back to. ]

I made a tricky mess of a situation for myself. I found someone I thought I had quite a lot in common with, and we did. We enjoyed each other's company, truly. But after we were married we both went off to war. And then I fell through time and met someone I had more than just 'a lot in common with.' And that left me with two husbands in two different centuries and a guilty conscious each way. Both of them though, I can say, were lovesick.

[ She pulls another saddle now, plainer but darker leather. ]

That does sound like a mess -- not that I can talk. Back home I had made a right mess of things myself. Doc left town for a while, and I thought he died -- and then I ended up kissing someone else and he ended up getting taken from us -- and I never really got a chance to sort out any of it back home.

[it's the first time she's really mentioned dolls or the love triangle that had been happening back in purgatory to anyone, but it comes up naturally here.

Goodness. It does sound like you have a relationship with 'messy.' Although I will say I'm grateful for my mess because it's cleaned up quite nicely. And it looks like so far it is for you, as well.

[ Smiling, she tosses the first two saddles back to whence they came and then pulls out a simple but large gift box big enough. ]

He's very lucky, how much you love him.

I do -- messy was sort of my forte for a long time. It's weird to think I've managed to clean it up.

[especially considering her relationship with doc here in wonderland had mostly started as a desperate ploy for her to keep the one thing that was familiar to her close to her. and now, over a year later, they were engaged. who would have thought.]

I'm the lucky one, really. He's put up with a lot from me, and asked for very little in return.

He sounds a lot like Jamie, honestly. Do you know if the two of them ever met before Jamie left?

I don't think so -- Doc isn't always the most social of people.

[not that he's unfriendly per se (though he could be a right asshole when he wants to be) but going out and meeting people is not always on his list of priorities, she's grateful for the friends he has managed to make though, even some of them, like ray, are gone now.]

So, alike then, but also quite different. Jamie likes meeting people, likes telling stories and hearing them in return.

[ She smiles softly, fondly. She misses him so much, already, but she tries to remind herself that they will see one another again. ]
