001 - Just like the talkies! [Video]
.... Ha-Hello? [There's a messy bit of hair and then a very brown eye, pulling back to reveal a curiously tattooed but youthful face. He looks a combination of nerve-wracked and delighted to try out the facetime function, but keeps most of the discoloration just out of sight, as though trying to hide any distinctive features.] Can people really see me on these things?
This is kind of embarrassing to figure out...[You can tell by the way the screen trembles slightly, if not by the stilted awkwardness that's otherwise overriding a Chicago accent.] I-I'm really nervous, can ya all see that? 'Cause..what happens if I drop it? I bet it costs an arm and leg!
But this has gotta be the keenest thing I've ever seen! [He shakes his head, deeply impressed.] It's like everybody's their own director of their very own personal-life talkies, or radio...only it's like a telephone, too with without the wire? Nuts!
Haha, I-It's like I'm a movie star! (Not a very good one, of course.... Okay, so probably a lousy one...) [He squints, and rubs sheepishly at the corner of his eye.] This is really strange. This whole place knocks me for a loop.
So ah, nobody else around here happens to know a thing or two about New York, do ya, by any chance? I heard some people here could be from the future!
But I... guess I don't really know if I wanna know about the future, right now, so... if you are, p-please don't tell me about it! If it's gonna be bad, I think I'd rather not worry about it just yet.
[Depression's depressing enough, and all that. He waits expectantly for about half a minute with the feed running live, looking hopefully down into his palm pilot. It's the kind of hopeful, giddy-nervousness that's downright painful to look at for long, for most decent-hearted people, without wanting to pat him on the shoulder and tell him not to worry, things'll be swell.]

Zack debates what to say for a minute before flipping on the video feed. He smiles a bit and waves. ]
People can see you on this thing, yeah. They're not too hard to come by so I wouldn't worry about breaking it.
[ He has no idea what or where 'New York' is so he'll leave that be for a moment. ]
My name's Zack. What's yours?
video;
You'd think only really rich folks could afford a thing like these... but then this mansion's huge and fancy anyway!
How did small fry like me get on the guestlist, I wonder?
Ah- ahahah- I'm Jacuzzi! [There was a faint hope in the weak flutter on his voice that his name didn't hold any sort of notoriety around these parts.]
video;
Pretty sure I'm not rich. The mansion's a bit...special.
[ He's not about to freak the kid out even more with details -- or at least, not immediately. ]
It pulls just about anybody, I think.
[ Another smile. Being friendly and reassuring is something he's good at. ]
Nice to meet you, Jacuzzi. You need any help finding your way around?
video;
[Ah, the life of a gin-toting hoodlum! This one's rather meek, for the kind of work that earns his supper.]
I-I think I might? I've been a mansion before, but never one big enough to get myself lost in. Where is this place even supposed to be, anyway?
video;
That's pretty much the case with everyone here. None of us really know why we turn up; we just do.
[ Such a cute hoodlum! Zack doesn't really suspect him of terrible things...though that mark on his face is interesting. ]
I can come give you a bit of a tour, if it'll help? [ As for 'where' they are... ] I was told this place is called Wonderland. There's supposed to be a fairy tale about it, but I never heard of it before I got here.

[He tilts his head, thinking, then tilts it further, rolling his head to stretch his neck.]
I've been here awhile, though, and I haven't noticed anything bad happening because of it.

WAUUUGHHHH! WHAT THE HECK!!?
[And now the durability of said palm pilot is put to the test, as Jacuzzi all but flings the device down with that exclamation and backs himself against a wall, shuffling his feet to put as much distance between him and THAT as possible.]
Wh-Wh-Wh-Whu- What IS that thing!?
[video]
[video]
He saw it. However briefly, he just saw it with his own two eyes- a real-life monster on the box screen, and given the two and two he's put together on how these things function, that means somewhere, in this house, under this roof right now, there is some great scaly thing with glowing demon eyes that's just locked eyes with him for the briefest of instants.
Nice would chuck her knuckles lovingly against his shoulder and call him a scaredy cat. Say it was his imagination, running wild with him again. But there was no denying it, that... thing, he just saw!
Gulping, he approaches the camera to pick it up very gingerly, one arm shielding over his eyes so he doesn't have to look. His teeth are showing in a cringe of pure horror.
Oh god. How was he ever gonna sleep easy now?]
[video]
It looks like he's frightened the Viking.
Not wanting to do much more damage, especially to a new arrival, Toothless presses his paw down on the buttons that will end the call, after one final trill. Maybe he'll track him down later and convince him he's harmless, or maybe it's best to keep his distance. In any case, he'll find out later.]
[video] hope you don't mind a late response!
It's not as if he didn't admit that he was nervous, though. At this point, dropping and breaking the mobile is probably the least of his concerns. (Though she had to wonder what would happen... she's never heard of someone's mobile breaking here, oddly enough.)]
I can tell you a bit about New York and about the future, but only if you're interested to hear it. [Her London accent is quite the contrast to his Chicago one. Martha isn't going to push him into hearing about either of those things, because in a way he's right. It's better not to know the specific details of one's future, as tempting as it might be to ask.]
It might do you more good to learn about this place first, though. You're right that it's strange.
[video] Never too late! Backtag me forever!
Jacuzzi smiles sheepishly and bends to sit at the top of a staircase, holding the device between his knees.]
You've gotta point, there! Take it one step at a time... guess I'm getting ahead of myself a little. I barely know anything about this place, besides that it's called Wonderland, and there are events, and nobody's got any clue how to leave, but who turns up is a great big grab bag!
....oh, and there's no landlord that comes knocking for rent. I guess that's a huge relief!
What else can you tell me about it?
[video] I am so slow, augh.
He's already got the basic gist of it, though, which means that this might be a bit easier to explain than she thought.
Martha's particularly curious about his comment regarding the rent. She hadn't even thought about that when she arrived, because the idea of having to pay to live in the place you were kidnapped to just seems too ludicrous.]
That all sounds about right... Have you heard about the mirror side yet?
[video]
[Usually people are proud to rattle off the good and eager to be the first ones to warn about the not-so-good. Jacuzzi thinks getting kidnapped here with no warning, and Events where people die and lose their memories, should pretty much cover the not-so-good.]
[video]
I suppose you could call it a bad neighborhood. Sort of. It's the right idea. Have you noticed all the mirrors around this place? There are so many of them because there's actually another version of this place that exists through the mirrors. Sounds mad, but you should be able to tell by now that this place is hardly normal.

Surprisingly he responds with a pretty mellow tone. This guy's obviously pretty worked up, so his usual exuberance would probably just make the poor guy's anxiety worse. (That and America is still nursing a hangover/effects of getting fingers blown off/etc. after his birthday bash. Energy is a little hard to muster at the moment.) ]
Unless you're before 1864, then I can't say I'm gonna be of much help far as future things go. Hell, I can't even pick out half the things you're talking about. Definitely exciting though, ain't it? These little visual telegraphs are just the beginning! No need to be nervous though. It's mostly alright around here.
[ "Mostly" is subjective but he doesn't get too into that... ]
Though I can safely say I know more than a thing or two 'bout New York. Been around since it was in Holland's hands!
( video )
[He didn't pay much attention to history class in school, so... he just safely assumes that was a long time ago.]
Are you an immortal?
( video )
[ shrug. ]
I'm close enough to immortal to count!
[ Killing a country is pretty complicated, after all. The fact that he teeters on the edge of actual death in his time period is something that he doesn't voice and tries to ignore. ]
Re: ( video )
... is it a good thing, or a bad thing?
( video )
[ He certainly drank enough to kill a whole squadron a few days ago. ]
